Ask any mom and she’ll tell you, it’s the little things that count. Yes, you can certainly go out and buy her some big fancy present, and you should (we can hear all you moms breathing a sigh of relief), but just doing a few simple things around the house for her on Mother’s Day is something she won’t soon forget.
We’ve got a few easy projects in mind for this, and nothing too fancy, as we’re looking to give you guys a few ideas that just about anyone on any budget, schedule or skill level can do for that special woman who brought you up and deserves so much love. Try one of these out, and just see how many thankful smiles (and maybe even tasty mom-baked treats!) you get.
Repaint the Trim
The walls are the big stars of the house, when it comes to painting, and they’re the things that people always tend to talk about when they’re looking to spruce up. Because of that, and because it’s not at eye-level, the trim in most homes tends to go a lot longer without getting repainted.
This makes it an oh-so-ideal candidate for a mom’s day project because not only is it something thoughtful that she probably hasn’t had time to do herself, it’s actually very simple to do.
All you really need is a little bit of painter’s tape, the paint color of the trim (usually white, but you can ask your mom if she has the old bucket or take a small paint chip into a hardware store if you’re unsure), some drop cloths or newspaper and a paint brush and you’re set! Just tape off the edge of the trim from the wall, set the drop cloth or newspaper below, and use a smooth stroke going in the same direction as the trim to paint.
Build a Small Hanging Garden
We’ve been seeing these all over the web and, as the Residential Painters Birmingham AL loves to call, in all sorts of trendy homes lately, so if you’re looking for an extra-simple, yet stylish project for your mom, this is the one.
Not all homes have space for a full garden, nor do all moms have time for one, but everyone loves the freshness and energy that comes with plants. Hanging gardens allow you to have those lovely, lively plants in your life (even inside!) without the hassle.
The first ingredient to cook up this project is a hanging planter or two, which you can either buy pre-made at most hardware stores and other places they sell plants or you can make out of just about anything that can hold a pot or two. You can even plant directly in to some containers. You do need to think about drainage, however, so if you’re doing this indoors, you’ll need to get containers that can hold a small tub underneath the plants to catch water.
Once you’ve got a planter or so, buy a few starter plants (get your mom’s favorites, or ask the shop attendant what would best grow in the size of planter and part of the house you’ll be hanging it in), some soil, a gardening spade and some plant food. Transfer the starter plants to the pot with soil prepared (check online to do this right for your specific plant), hang the planter box up where you want, and place the pot inside!
Replace the Bulbs around the House
Perhaps the simplest project on this list, this is also the only one that can end up saving your mom money! Unless your mom is on top of her eco-game, there’s a pretty good chance she hasn’t upgraded all of her bulbs to more modern, efficient models.
This one will cost you a bit more than the other two, but in the end, it’s gonna actually save your mother quite a lot of money on bills, for which she’ll surely be grateful.
Go around her house and make a list of each bulb, its wattage and light type. Then head to the store and pick up a CFL or LED bulb that’s equivalent to each bulb on your list. After that, it’s simply a matter of removing the bulbs that are there without burning yourself and replacing them, and you’re done.
None of these projects are huge on the “wow” factor, but trust us: your mom will love them. Just seeing you putting thought and effort into a little thing to make her life just that much brighter will show her how much you care, and that’s exactly what this day should be about.
